Sarah Levine Simon’s THE PORTRAIT is a new comedy of manners—a highfaluting madcap caper, satirizing the war between the haves and the have-nots!

Marty Finklestein, a struggling theater director, has been bequeathed THE PORTRAIT of his 18th Century Jewish ancestor. Over pate and crepes, at a dinner hosted by his wealthy cousin Toddy Renard, antics by the French maid Honore, high notes from Marty’s singer wife Alissa, and pretentions about their early American Jewish roots, a wager is made as to who will buy THE PORTRAIT.

The production stars Rutanya Alda (Film: The Deer Hunter) as Honore, Jessica Eleanor Grant (As The World Turns) as Alissa, James Leaf (Catastrophe, Young Mechanics Ensemble) as Marty, Caitlin O’Heaney (Bdwy: A Matter of Gravity) as Helen, Roger Hendricks Simon (Film: Wall Street, Money Never Sleeps) as Henry, June Stein (Film: Romance & Cigarettes) as Agnes and James Williams (OBR: Brothers Karamazov Part I) as Toddy.

The production features scenic design by David Bragin and Josie Williams, costume design by Josie Williams, and lighting design by Emma Schimminger. Name of Designer is the sound designer and Regina Novicky is the stage manager.

THE PORTRAIT plays the following regular schedule through Sunday, January 26:

 Wednesdays at 8 p.m.

 Thursdays at 8 p.m.

 Fridays at 8 p.m.

 Saturdays at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

 Sundays at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $18 and are now available online at or by calling 212-868-4444. Tickets may also be purchased in-person at the theater ½ hour prior to performance.

AdLib (Actors and Directors Living in Brooklyn) provides opportunities to actors, directors and other theater artists living in Brooklyn or willing to work in Brooklyn. We will present both existing works and new works by emerging playwrights.

Our goal is provide an environment where theater artists can come together to both practice their art and craft and to provide live theater to audiences in Brooklyn at an affordable price.

Working from our studio donated by a member, we can provide a cost free space for our artists to create and our audiences to experience that work.

For our artists, we will also present our work in other Boroughs, primarily Manhattan, in order to showcase their work to both Manhattan audiences and to agents, producers and other potential entities that may lead to paying jobs.

Although we will focus primarily on actors and directors, we will encourage the development of new plays by our playwright members.

For audiences in Brooklyn, we plan to offer admission by contribution so that no one will be deprived of live theater because they cannot afford a ticket.

THE SIMON STUDIO is in its 36th. year as a theatre and film training, development and production center located at the Drama Book Shop/Arthur Seelen Theatre in Manhattan – an ensemble of actors, writers, directors and industry guests under the direction of Roger Hendricks Simon. The Portrait was first produced by the studio for their NPR drama series SIMON STUDIO PRESENTS.
